Learn how to make soy candles, or
hand poured soy candles, using simple and easy to follow steps given
below. It can also be a very satisfying hobby for some.
Container soy candles are the easiest to
make. Soy candle making involves a process of combing wax with dye and
fragrance, container configuration and wick. All these components need
to be brought together judicially to make the candle perform. Often,
dyes and fragrances can react poorly with each other and cause problems.
A reaction with the wax can also produce undesirable effects.
Making soy candles is much easier than
paraffin candles as the soy wax is easy to clean with soap and water.
A dishwasher can also be used.
HOW TO MAKE SOY CANDLES:
Materials Required
Materials are easily available on the Internet
or in local hobby shops. You will need:
- 1 pound of soy wax
- 1 mason jar
- 1 ounce of fragrance oil
- Wax dye
- 1 cotton wick, for example HTP-105
Soy wax
Soy wax comes in block and flake forms.
The flake form is easier to use.
Fragrance
Fragrances can be mixed to produce your
signature aroma. These need to be compatible with soy wax. The right
proportion of scent oil is important, as too much of it will spoil the
candle.
Wax dyes
Dye blocks are made of wax and meant to
be melted with soy wax. Also used are concentrated liquids and dye chips.
Soy wax candle wicks
Depending on the diameter you may need
a thicker or thinner wick. The easiest are wicks with a metal disc attached.
Soy wax candle containers
Use any suitable container of your liking.
The container should be meant for use with soy candles.

HOW TO MAKE SOY CANDLES:
TESTING
Test the candle for a soot free, smooth
burn. "Mushrooming" building of carbon gases at the
wick, can cause sooting and bad odors. Trim the wick or use different
wicks to get the desired results. The burn pool should be about ¼ to
½ inch deep. The flame should be clear and stable.
